Homeless to Happy Ending: How an Opcity Agent Went Above and Beyond to Change her Clients’ Lives

Anna Boucher has been a real estate agent for 28 years. Last week, she shared a story with our agent success team that moved us to tears.


UPDATE: A few weeks after we spoke to Anna about this story, she closed another deal from an Opcity introduction for over $1M, and they have just signed a listing agreement with her for a home worth $4.8M. If that isn't good karma, we don't know what is. 


Anna was introduced to John and Jane* through Opcity in June 2018 after several other agents chose not to work with them due to the price point—finding a property with a budget of $205,000 is a challenging feat in the Bay area that not many agents are up to.

John and Jane were in a tough place in their lives. They had been homeless for eight years, living out of their car. After coming into a bit of money, they were in a position to make a change. The couple needed to find an agent who could help them with their unique situation and guide them through the process of rebuilding their credit to help them find a home. Due to their budget they had been passed around the system, and all they needed was someone to help them establish equal footing.

When Anna connected with them during their first meeting, she was touched by their soft spoken demeanors and willingness to do whatever it would take to turn their lives around.

“I’ve been selling real estate for 28 years, and I was very happy to be able to help someone. It was the best sale I ever had.”

“I was so thankful John and Jane came under my wing. They owed about $1,000 on a credit card, and they had been paying a company to improve their credit score. We stopped paying the third party company, and started working on paying off their debt. So we got that done.”

“They also had a judgement against them because they had been evicted in the past. We realized that, and took care of the outstanding balance. We made sure to clear everything up before we put an offer on a home.”  

In this type of market the competition is very stiff. They lost the first offer they put in, but Anna fought for the second one. She went to bat for John and Jane with the mobile home park manager.

“I said, ‘Please work with us. They have already cleared everything up. Every time I ask them to do something, they do it right away. They are going to make excellent tenants.’ I did not tell anyone they had been homeless; I did not want that stigma for them. That should not define the rest of their lives.”  

John and Jane successfully closed in July, just one month after meeting Anna.

“I’ve been selling real estate for 28 years, and I was very happy to be able to help someone. It was the best sale I’ve ever had. We can all get so jaded, but really our job is about taking care of people.”

Anna started accepting Opcity leads in June 2018. Her brokerage signed up, and she saw it as a great opportunity to get new business, but never imagined the type of connections she would make.

“I wouldn’t have been able to help them if it hadn’t been for Opcity. I’m just so thankful that I’m getting referrals from Opcity and am ecstatic that I’ve been able to use my expertise to help John and Jane. I was very happy to have that opportunity. There were multiple other agents that passed on that opportunity.”

Like Anna said, it’s easy to become jaded by the industry, and every now and then it takes a story like this to remember why we all do what we do—to help people find new homes.  

Someone told Anna that she couldn’t help everyone, and she said, “I’m not trying to help everyone, I’m just trying to help this couple and I’m going to see it through.”
